Hilltop Educator Institute Presents:
Culturally Competent Educators: Building Brilliance in Black and Brown Children

Overview:
As teachers and educators, it is important for you to know yourself as cultural beings; to become familiar with other cultures and see their social realities through their lens; to recognize and examine your own participation and benefits of privilege gained by the color of your skin; to recognize and examine your own biased perceptions, assumptions and attitudes around race, class, gender, sexual orientation, language and finally to engage in social action.
This workshop will look at good teaching strategies that will engage students across all boundaries of socioeconomics. This session will look at ways you can engage students in the important issues that are opportunities for active learning, engage students in big picture thinking and breaking it down into pieces as they connect the dots, engage students in action real life experiences with opportunities for reflection and engage students to help deepen their understanding of self and all the elements of living as a cultural being.
Morning Session
In the morning session led by Dr. Eddie Moore Jr., we will raise the crucial questions about teaching and learning across race lines, in a racially unequal and segregated society. With a lens focused equally (and with critical compassion) on white women and black boys, Dr. Moore Jr will offer thoughtful, urgent, personal, and concrete suggestions for moving beyond "the stereotypes, the misinformation, and the lies we have been taught about Black boys" to new habits of understanding, respecting, and connecting that instead help unleash young peoples full human contributions.
This workshop will introduce The Guide for White Women Teaching Black Boys (publication date October 2017), which was created to support White Women to engage in concentrated, focused inquiry around their relationships with Black male students and the impact on those relationships of race and racism.
This guide requires the reader to work through activities that may challenge them, ask them to honestly reflect on who they are and where they come from, and to reflect on what their role is in possibly perpetuating an inherently white and privileged society. By engaging in personal and professional introspective work, this guide takes the readers through works by experts, stories by educators and students, and videos that will help personalize the educational lives of black males.
Afternoon Session
Following lunch, Sarah Felstiner from Hilltop, Theressa Lenear from the Goddard College and Tilman Smith, Childcare Resource Coach will lead us through the afternoon in conversation about how the considerations above play out in an early childhood context. They will share stories and lead discussions about the particular opportunities for supporting and improving the experience of children of color, in classrooms and schools serving young children.
By the end of this workshop, you will be equipped with additional tools and skills to overcome unconscious bias and forge authentic connections with your Black and Brown students.
About the Presenters
Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. has pursued and achieved success in academia, business, diversity, leadership and community service. Dr. Moore is recognized as one of the nations top motivational speakers and educators especially for his work with students K-16. Dr. Moore is the Founder/Program Director for the White Privilege Conference (WPC), [www.whiteprivilegeconference.com].
